iOS & Android vs PSP & NDS

Interesting cake graphics presented by Flurry Analytics guys, which shows the incidence and growth of Android and IOS for the US gaming market.

First, below is the income share for games on portable devices, where Android and IOS have greatly increased their percentage of the pie at the expense of a PSP and (especially) Nintendo DS to be left behind.

It is significant to watch from the figure for last year that the PSP had a 25% of total revenues, while Nintendo DS owned 75%.

However, here are some important considerations to read before conclusions:

  • The interpretation suggest that PSP or Nintendo DS have not reduced their income, due to absolute income values have not decreased. The correct analysis must be done on the other hand, where Android and IOS are prime actors, where the mobile gaming market has seen a brutal increase of 60% in the last year. Thus, the total revenue pie is much bigger than it was in 2009.
  • Handhelds are accessing the same target now that years ago, while the iPhone/Android discovered a new group of users who also want to play with his terminal, and that nobody had really exploded.
  • The second point to consider, remember that the nearly released Nintendo 3DS and proximately NGP should represent a great improvement in number for Nintendo and Sony.
  • Do not forget that we are talking about USA, a very iPhonized market (and also pro Android in the last year). Would have to see the same chart located in Europe, and above all the other major global markets like Japan.

Finally, you can also take a look to the distribution of income in terms of total video game market, also including consoles:
