Mac App Store: Positive and Negative

One million downloads in just one day. This is the key sentence for the projected success of this new store launched by Apple. To give a view as objective as possible, I found few points to summarize what are the positive and negative aspects of this store:

Positive:

  • A single place to access thousands of applications: it is a point that appeals to users comfort. No need word of mouth to find good programs nor dig through the network, everything in the same computer. The installation becomes a pleasant task as well.
  • Defining key for future switchers: from now on, receive advice from friends or dealers telling them not to worry about the programs because of they are as simple as an new icon on the new computer. For sure this will attract people who do not have high computer skills, which will mean higher sales.
  • The cradle of the developer: from now on will be easier for developers sell their applications, knowing they have a store available to them placed in all the world OS X will be an incentive to develop the platform, with good profits.
  • Automatic Updates: Like what happens with the iOS App Store, Mac App Store keeps track of our applications and we are notified when updates are available. We update them one by one or all at once.

Negative:

  • Problem for applications that are already purchased for the Mac: not all installed applications on Mac are recognized as installed, what is more worrying, even if they are recognized as installed, will not allow us to update the versions through the store.
  • Support pages: the Mac App Store has no support pages, or wikis, this means that if we have a problem with an application or need additional information, we should be searching by Internet any solution. Unless developers decide to integrate some sort of support in the same app.
  • Danger for those not on the platform: applications that do not wish to enter the store does not have to do, but if sales slow down to the point that it is almost mandatory to be, then either give up or go away completely.
  • Apple publication rules: this will continue, as it does in iOS, blocking entry of doubtful content or applications, any proliferation of a particular function in order to avoid excessive noise in the store, the problem is that sometimes it borders on subjective opinion.

Well those are just few points of this new service provided by Apple, of course there are many more of both sides.
